Odisha has traditionally been recognized as treasure trove of mineral resources and accounts for about 33 percent of total iron ore resources of India.

The eastern limb of this synclinorium hosts the major high grade iron ore having +64 percent Fe. The total iron ore reserves in this sector is about 7,173 million tons of which, the proved reserves account for about 4,098 million tons. Thakurani an Roida Iron mines are located at a distance of about 7 km from State highway connecting Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.

Barbil is the nearest town having railhead on South Eastern Railway. Unlike other private operating mines, EIML has its own private siding at a distance of 3 km from Barbil Railway siding and is capable of simultaneous loading of two rakes for faster despatch and timely delivery of materials to respective customers.

There are two iron ore prospects, Thakurani and Roida, within operational control of EIML. EIML operates over an area of 45 hectares in Thakurani and the reserves of which have been estimated at 30 million tons. The average chemical analysis usually conforms to Fe 63 - 64 percent, SiO2 1.4-2.5 percent, Al2O3 2.0-3.5 percent, P 0.04-0.05 percent and S trace to 0.02 percent.

In Roida, EIML operates over 150 hectares and the reserves of which have been estimated at 46 million tons with an average grade of Fe 62.17 percent, SiO2 2.50 and percent, Al2O3 2.63 percent. On rejection of laterites and minus 10 mm, the grade of iron ore works out at Fe +64 percent, SiO2 0-2.9 percent, Al2O3 1.6-2.3 percent, P 0.02-0.045 percent and S trace to 0.02 percent.

The main ore types occurring in Thakurani and Roida are Hard Massive Ore (HMO), Hard Laminated Ore (HLO), Soft Laminated Ore (SLO), Lateritic / Limonitic Ore (LO) and Blue Dust (BO). The HMO and HLO mainly occur below the overburden in weathered zone. Of the total ore types, the incidences of hard laminated ore, Soft Laminated Ore and hard massive ore jointly share about 80 percent and the balance is blue dust.
